A sudden sting of a bee on my neck sharp, unexpected, yet oddly awakening, seems to deliver an unconventional message: perhaps the answer lies not in the waters, but in the forests above.

Ngabwe is richly endowed with natural forests, a favorable climate, and a community already steeped in agrarian traditions.
Beekeeping, therefore, emerges not as a new idea but as an underutilized opportunity.

Today, it is largely practiced at subsistence level using traditional hives and techniques. Yet, with the right investments and institutional support, it could evolve into a key economic pillar.

As a Local Authority and development partner, we recognize that transforming beekeeping into a viable enterprise requires a multi-sectoral approach:

(1) Capacity Building and Technical Training
Equip local farmers especially women and youth with skills in modern beekeeping, hive management, and value addition.

(2) Provision of Equipment and Infrastructure
Facilitate access to modern hives, harvesting tools, and protective gear through Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and community-based manufacturing.

(3) Environmental Sustainability
Encourage the planting of nectar-rich trees and the conservation of forest reserves, ensuring long-term viability of bee forage.

(4) Value Addition and Market Access
Establish honey processing centers and promote the “Ngabwe Pure Honey” brand in formal markets, both local and by extension

(5) Institutional Partnerships and Cooperatives
Support the formation of beekeeping cooperatives linked to national associations, enabling better market reach and advocacy.

(6) Policy Alignment and Funding
Seeking strategic alliances with Nom Governmental Organizations, government agencies, and donors.

Investing in beekeeping is more than a rural empowerment tool. It is a catalyst for sustainable development.
Ngabwe’s future economy must be as resilient, adaptive, and regenerative as nature herself. As we celebrate our achievements at the agricultural show, let us also commit to bold shifts, toward sustainability, innovation, and inclusive growth.
